June 2015 Newsletter

There were eight members at the meeting/installation on May 27, 2015. Special guests attending the meeting were Jeremy’s parents, Robert and Fran Charron. Adjutant/Finance Officer Ned Brooks read the previous meeting’s minutes which were accepted. Ned also reported $7,349.84 in the checking account.

New Member: The most recent Charron-Legion Award recipient, Nashua Police Officer Jonathan Turcotte was unanimously accepted. Welcome Aboard Jon !!

Due to the quickly approaching deadline (less than a week) of choosing a young man or young woman to sponsor at Boy or Girl State, members voted unanimously to allow the Adjutant and Commander to review the lists of eligible candidates and make a choice. Our Post is now the proud sponsor of a young lady from Claremont. The Adjutant and Commander also chose to personally sponsor a young man from Contoocook. More info will follow regarding the two young people selected.

The members voted to suspend the remainder of the meeting for the purpose of installation. District Five Commander Rick Dube and his team did a great job installing the officers. Commander Dube later remarked that Commander Hargreaves, when he was a Derry Police Officer, used to chase him (Dube) around in Derry many year ago. Commander Hargreaves asked the members to recruit more members so that we could break 100 for the first time in the history of our post. To reach this goal, we need to add less than 15 to our roster. Also present was Department Vice Commander Gerard LeDuc who praised our Post for the many worthwhile activities we are involved throughout the year. The Commander’s wife, Jan and Mrs. Fran Charron were presented with bouquets of flowers. The Commander also expressed his deep appreciation for his wife’s support in all the Legion activities.

Our Post was well represented at the Memorial Services at the Veterans’ Cemetery in Boscawen on May 30th, 2015.

Only five people showed up for the highway cleanup detail on June 6th. Those participating were Past Finance Officer and Past Judge Advocate Nick Pishon, Sgt. at Arms Jim Nye, Commander Dave Hargreaves and his wife Jan and very special friend of our Post, Mary Donnelly who is a maintenance technician at the Police Academy. By the way, Mary Donnelly recently be came member of the Legion Auxiliary for Post 21 also in Concord. The detail took about three and a half hours and only ten bags were collected. We all noticed that the amount of trash along the highway was less than usual. When returning the equipment to the state shed in Allenstown, the DOT foreman told the Commander that a group of county prisoners had cleaned up an adjoining section of highway and mistakenly went well into our section.

Upcoming Events:

American Legion State Convention at the Radisson in Manchester from June 26 through the 28th. At a recent statewide Law Enforcement Exploring meeting, the Exploring Adviser for the Portsmouth Police Department inquired of the Commander if any of our Legion Post members would be interested in volunteering to participate in a citywide exercise put on with the Department of Homeland Security. Portsmouth PD is looking for several hundred actors to participate in a training exercise that “…..may include strong law enforcement content….”. If your interested, you can contact Portsmouth PD or the Commander. This event is scheduled later in July. Exact Date, time and location will follow.
